Understanding how to set career goals is crucial for anyone looking to achieve long-term success and satisfaction in their professional life. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re well into your career, having clear, actionable objectives is key to reaching your full potential. From defining your ultimate job aspirations to mapping out the steps needed to get there, setting career goals gives you direction and focus.
In my work with clients through my career planning packages, I’ve learned invaluable insights about what it takes to successfully navigate the complexities of career development. These experiences have shown me that career planning is not just about setting goals, but also about understanding the journey and being prepared for the challenges that may arise.
Before you can effectively set your career goals, it’s essential to first understand yourself – your strengths, passions, and what truly motivates you. Only by knowing yourself can you choose a career path that aligns with your values and aspirations. How to set career goals is as much about self-discovery as it is about strategic planning. The career you choose should reflect who you are at your core, not just the opportunities that seem most accessible or popular at the moment.
Career planning is essential to achieving satisfaction and success in my chosen career. Whether I am aiming to be a contracts administrator in a small construction firm or the finance director of a multinational corporation, knowing how to set career goals and defining what is required to get there will help me achieve my ambitions.
Career planning is a basic yet key principle used in business by successful people. So why not apply the same principles to managing my career by formulating a career development plan to control my direction?
My suggestions below will assist me with setting my career goals and writing a career plan with clear, actionable objectives, based on what I’ve learned from working closely with individuals just like you.
What is a career goal?
A career goal is a clear statement that defines the ultimate job I aspire to throughout the course of my career. Provided it is realistic, a clear career goal allows me to then set myself an action plan, or personal development plan, to work towards achieving my professional ambitions.
Some steps to set and achieve career goals
To help me achieve my ultimate career ambition, there are several steps I need to take along the way. From determining and defining my end objective to plotting a personal development plan of action to ensure I get there, smart management of my career takes more than just motivation – it takes careful planning.
Explore the possibilities
I may be someone who has known for a very long time exactly what occupation I aspire to. Or perhaps I have several careers in mind with no clear understanding of which one is best for me. Either way, the initial step in formulating a career plan involves exploring in more detail the occupations that interest me and ensuring I am comfortable with the reality of my options.
To do this, I will research and explore my occupational preferences to determine the qualifications, typical career paths, and specific skills required.
I will ask myself:
- What training and qualifications are required to enter the occupation?
- What skills and interests are required to succeed in the occupation?
- How do my skills and interests match up? Where are the gaps?
- What do I find particularly inspiring about the occupation?
- What training, support, and resources could I expect to receive? Will these help or quicken my success?
- What is the typical work environment like?
- What are the standard responsibilities?
- What advancement opportunities are available?
- Where is the work located?
- What is the typical salary?
- What level of work-life balance is achievable?
At the end of this step, I will have greater insight into my identified occupation(s).
Compare options
The next step involves comparing my options to narrow down my choices. I will ask myself:
- What occupation suits me best and will satisfy my professional and personal ambitions?
- What occupation best matches my skills, interests, and values?
- What occupation is likely to be in greatest demand by employers in the future?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option?
- In which occupation can I achieve my desired salary and work-life balance?
- Which occupation can I picture myself doing day-in, day-out?
When considering these questions, I will objectively think about what is required to succeed in each job. What weaknesses would I need to overcome to succeed? What strengths would see me thrive?
I will also consider if each job feels like the right ‘fit’ for me.
At the end of this step, I will have narrowed down my options and identified the one occupation that I ultimately aspire to.
From this, I can define what I want to achieve in this chosen profession. I will write this goal down so that I can then devise an action plan to achieve it. For example, “In 15 years’ time, I want to be the financial controller of a large commercial organization.”
Writing down my goal gives me a clearer direction and focuses me on the big picture of what I ultimately want to achieve in my professional life. My Career Goal Planner contains a template to help me plot this out.
The process of setting career goals isn’t over once I have defined my end-game. For it to become a reality, I must then plot a plan of action, or a personal development plan, to help me achieve the goal I’ve set for myself.
- Establish short-term goals
That’s why the third step involves creating a set of short-term actions that will start me down the path towards my career objective. I will focus on what I need to achieve in the next three to five years, specifically in the areas of:
- Learning: To enter or progress in my preferred occupation, do I need to earn certain qualifications? If so, what courses should I consider?
- Experience: What experience do I need to acquire to become a suitable candidate for my next promotion or to gain my first entry-level role in this field?
- Skills development: What specific skills should I develop to make myself a suitable candidate for my next promotion?
- Ideal next job: What role represents the next sensible step towards achieving my career goal?
- Professional membership: Would professional membership aid my career advancement?
Before answering these questions, it’s worth reviewing job descriptions for the next role I aspire to. This will highlight any skills or competencies that I need to focus on developing in my current role before I commence my next job search.
- Establish long-term objectives
Once these short-term objectives are in place, the next step in my career planning involves turning my attention to longer-term planning objectives. I will plot out a realistic career progression pathway that defines the jobs and their increasing levels of skills, responsibilities, and seniority that will allow me to reach my goal. This is essentially my roadmap for how I am going to advance my career to get to my ultimate end goal.
Before I can chart my course towards the future, I rely on the insights and experiences I have gathered through the work I do with clients in my career subscription package. These sessions allow me to explore typical career pathways in various fields, helping both myself and my clients to identify the most effective steps forward. To gain additional insights, I also recommend talking to recruiters to understand the typical career paths for the roles we aspire to. Connecting with professionals on LinkedIn who are already on the pathway we aspire to can also be incredibly useful. Mentors can provide valuable guidance, and reviewing relevant job descriptions helps clarify the expectations and requirements for the next steps.
Based on what I have learned through my work with career package clients, I can plot my longer-term career pathway and the specific jobs I’ll need to advance through. For each job, I will define:
- Technical skills to acquire: This covers the specific learned abilities I’ll need to pick up and use in each role.
- Soft skills to cultivate: I will identify the non-technical skills related to how I work that I’ll need to develop in this role, such as teamwork, networking, conflict resolution, or adaptability.
- Competencies to learn: I will list the knowledge and behaviors I need to acquire in this job, such as commercial awareness, negotiation, or conflict management.
- Specific experience to gain: I will determine what precise experience I should gain and what successes and achievements will allow me to quantify this experience to future employers.
- Personal or professional development: I will consider how I can personally and professionally grow in this role. For example, could I participate in a professional membership body, undertake accreditation, or upskill in new technology?
- Ideal length of tenure: I will decide how long I need to spend in this role to develop the necessary expertise and experience to become promotion-ready.
At the end of this step, I will have set out the career progression pathway I need to take to get from where I am today to where I ultimately want to be. Again, my Career Goal Planner, which is included in my career subscription package, contains a template to help me set this out.
- Write SMARTER career goals
When formulating my action plan, I will remember to set clearly defined, short objectives to work towards. To do this, the SMARTER system can be useful:
- Specific: Be as clear as possible and avoid ambiguous statements.
- Measurable: Quantify what I must achieve.
- Achievable: Motivate myself but also keep my goals reachable.
- Realistic: Be reasonable and keep my goals attainable so progress is achievable.
- Timely: Create timeframes for completing steps.
- Empowering: Ensure my goals feel right for me and help me make the changes I want.
- Reviewable: Keep my goals flexible so I can adjust to changing market conditions.
- Be flexible and measure your progress
Finally, I will remain flexible. My priorities and objectives may change over time, either due to my own changing personal circumstances or external factors outside my control, such as technological innovations or fluctuations in the skills employers require.
Therefore, I will check in from time to time to make sure my goals are still achievable and my short and long-term objectives remain realistic. If they aren’t, I will tweak my plan accordingly to keep myself on track.
As part of this review, I will make sure to measure my progress and congratulate myself for achievements I am particularly proud of.
I will also use this time to identify any areas where I am falling behind and then allocate time in my schedule to dedicate to improvements. I will consider if I require any support to make these improvements, such as from a mentor or by enrolling in a training course. Stretch opportunities in my existing role are another way of developing skills.
Whether I complete a monthly, quarterly, or bi-annual review, I will make sure to schedule it in my calendar as a recurring meeting. I will not cancel this appointment when it comes around. Instead, I will use it as a genuine opportunity for self-reflection.
- Write down your goals
Career planning or goal setting will only achieve its purpose if I follow the path I have planned. This means it is important to write down my career goals.
The process of putting pen to paper allows me to keep a clear focus, identify achievements, and make any necessary alterations as and when required. I will imagine I am planning an overseas trip – think about how much time and energy I would devote to it. My career will probably span the next thirty years of my life, and it deserves just as much focused planning, if not more.
